And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17
Satan would tempt us to despair; but good hope keeps us trusting in God, and rejoicing in Him. The word of God is the sword of the Spirit. The sword is a very necessary and useful part of a soldier's furniture. Scripture-arguments are the most powerful arguments to repel temptations with. Christ himself resisted Satan's temptations with, It is written. This, being hid in the heart, will preserve from sin, and will mortify and kill those lusts and corruptions that are latent there. (Matthew Henry)
Our pastor has memorized large portions of the Bible, entire books. It is fascinating on Sundays to watch him read from the scripture--from memory. He does not use notes of any kind for his sermons. Years ago I had a scripture verse on my board at school--down in the corner by my desk, not visible to the students. I was trying to memorize it; my principal came in and spotted it. Her reaction was interesting--she reacted like it was poison and I was told to take it down immediately.
The Bible is powerful--it is hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that the words come straight from God's mouth to us. Christ himself quoted scripture to repel attacks from Satan; this was done as an example for us. The school I'm currently in has a believer for a principal. He opens up meetings with prayer--no students are involved--just staff.

One of my favorite verses to study was "the word of God is living and active, sharper than a two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (hope that was close, it was from memory). I was always struck about the word "living"... from zoe... able to reproduce it's LIFE into us. Just amazing...
I went to that link that Brett gave... loved it and opened an account. Thanks, Brett.
That is impressive to me, that your pastor has memorized whole chapters. And I am so glad to hear that your principal is a Believer who prays for the students and school... we need that so much!
