Can You Hear Me Now?

And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the Lord, mine horn is exalted in the Lord; my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation. There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God. Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighted. 1 Samuel 2: 1-3

What great things she says of God. God had given her the gift of a child (Samuel) and she overlooks the gift, and praises the giver; whereas most forget the giver and fasten only on the gift. Every stream should lead us to the fountain; and the favours we receive from God should raise our admiration of the infinite perfections there are in God. There may be other Samuels, but no other Jehovah.

In this prayer of thanksgiving, Hannah focuses on four of God's attributes. (1) His unspotted purity. This is that attribute which is most praised in the upper world, by those that always behold His face. (2)His almighty power (3)His unsearchable wisdom; He clearly and perfectly sees into the character of every person and the merits of every cause, to those that seek them of Him (4) His unerring justice; By Him actions are weighed. His own are so, in His eternal counsels; the actions of the children of men are so, in the balances of His judgment, so that He will render to every man according to His work and is not mistaken in what any man is or does. (Matthew Henry)

As I read through the Old Testament I am struck with the realization that the majority of Christians in today's society do not understand and know God as earlier Christians did. Why is that? The Verizon commercial came to mind (don't ask-I can't control these thoughts). Hannah's relationship with God was extremely personal because it was all she had to focus her attention on. Yes she had the other wife to contend with, being barren, pleasing her husband, ect. ect. but she wasn't constantly surrounded with "stuff". Satan has very nicely managed to place so many things around us; that I can almost hear God asking during a moment of silence if we can "hear Him". I turned off the radio this morning as I drove to work--just to hear silence. It was nice--made me nervous--but nice.
