And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord. 1 Samuel 16:2
By this it appears: That Saul had grown very wicked and outrageous since his rejection, else Samuel would not have mentioned this. What impiety would he not be guilty of who dares kill Samuel.
That Samuel's faith was not so strong as one would have expected, else he would not have thus feared the rage of Saul. Would not He that sent him protect him and bear him out? But the best men are not perfect in their faith, nor will fear be wholly cast out anywhere this side of heaven. (Matthew Henry)
I don't know why this verse struck a chord with me. Maybe it makes me feel better within my own journey to read of their struggles. God had told Samuel to anoint the king He had chosen. And in doing so, he would have to travel in order to reach Jesse's family. Samuel was afraid that Saul would find out and kill him. Matthew Henry implied that we will always live with some types of fear--not a perfect world and neither are we--yet.

Okay, please forgive my silliness today...
I reaaalllyy needed a laugh today. I came here, read your post, was about to make some oh-so-profound-and-insightful comment (!) , but then looked over at your little visitor counter.
And saw that for the United States you had 666 visitors!! I cracked up. Sorry... but I laughed right out loud. I think God knew I just needed to stop being so serious and full of self-pity, and just trust Him to be in charge, and lighten up.
Thanks!
Loretta
