Dependancy

But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the Lord hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us. 1 Samuel 14:10

And upon this issue he puts it, firmly believing, as we all should: That God has the governing of the hearts and tongues of all men, even of those that know Him not, nor have any regard to Him, and serves His own purposes by them, though they mean not so, neither do their hearts think so. Jonathan knew God could discover his mind to him if he pleased, and would do it, since he depended upon Him, as surely by the mouth of a Philistine as by the mouth of a priest.

That God will, some way or other, direct the steps of those that acknowledge Him in all their ways, and seek unto Him for direction, with full purpose of heart to follow it. Sometimes we find most comfort in that which is least our own doing and into which we have been led by the unexpected, but well observed, turns of Providence. (Matthew Henry)

Saul, as king, was not doing very well. He wasn't seeking God's directions and taking off on his own. His son, Jonathan, was seeking God's direction and was awarded a military victory because of his obedience. With our country's government falling apart, it was good to be reminded that God does have control over all of mankind: believers or not. He will use men to serve His purpose and our part is to continue to pray for God's intervention in areas that are not right. Along with prayer, there needs to be action, and if we seek God's direction, He will provide us with a plan.

Chaos often breeds life, when order breeds habit. (Henry Adams 1838-1918)

I like this quote; it goes along with what Matthew Henry said that sometimes we find comfort in the unexpected. It's good to shake it up every now and then and let things fall differently.

I loved reading this... a reminder that God is sovereign over ALL, believers and non-believers, alike.

And it made me feel "noticed" by God, too. Since just a few minutes ago, in todays post, my verse for the day was Proverbs 3:6, acknowledging Him in all our ways, and Him directing our paths...

It made me feel watched over by a loving Father. :-)

It can be hard to find comfort in the unexpected, though...if you don't have the faith to realize that God has a plan...
